Massachusetts gets $46M for green buses, buildings
will get $46.7 million in funding to switch part of its bus fleet to hybrids and for “green” buildings, Congressional lawmakers announced.
“This cash infusion will help keep Massachusetts at the forefront of clean energy by revolutionizing our bus fleet and modernizing our facilities,” said Sen. John Kerry, who announced the funding in a statement with U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern and U.S. Rep. John Olver. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s State of Good Repair Program.
Worcester will receive the largest share at $39 million, the lawmakers said. Along with the purchase of hybrid buses, the funding will also be used to construct a maintenance and operations facility that is energy efficient and LEED-certified.
Other award winners are the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority in Springfield, which will receive $6.2 million to buy diesel-electric hybrid buses, and the Montachusett Regional Transit Authority in Fitchburg, which will get $1.5 million for new buses and for heating and air upgrades to its building.
Now, if we could only secure private sector jobs for these buses to drive us to.....
