Police on Detail

I have written before about the police work details and how money could be saved if we had civilians watching over the holes and construction instead like in most other states.   Even when we vote for this to happen, people in high places choose to keep the status qua.  Seem know the bigger issue could be that of gun safety.  Do we really want a police officer on duty overlooking the hole in the street with a loaded gun in his possession?  It was only a matter of time until a gun was snatched from one of those police officers on work duty and cause fatal consequences.  Again, my vote is for the civilian flagman, unarmed though he may be, to take the job at construction sites.  In regards to the following incidence, it could have been the policeman that was shot or other innocent bystanders.

LYNN, Mass.Authorities have released the name of the man who attacked a police officer outside Lynn City Hall, grabbed the officer's gun, and fatally shot himself, but are still trying to figure out why he did it.A spokeswoman for the Essex district attorney's office identified the man in Thursday's shooting as 27-year-old Marc Gaston of Lynn.
Police say Gaston approached the officer from behind while he was on a work detail and attacked him unprovoked.
